Gabions for geotechnical and architectural projects
Our projects have included installing “rock mattress” gabions for riverbank protection along the Clive River for the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, and retaining structures to contain solidified lava flow above walking tracks on Mt Ngāuruhoe for the Department of Conservation.
We have also worked extensively with high-end property developers in the Hawke’s Bay on a range of architectural retaining walls.

Staircase Deviation
Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Tongariro National Park
Part of a track upgrade for the Department of Conservation, this project involved constructing a one metre high gabion wall in two sections to retain the old pyroclastic lava flow.
Haupouri Farm Park
Hawke's Bay
This project was completed for a returning customer at the newly developed Hapouri Farm Park. Our first goal was to use the gabions as a retaining wall to increase the height of the lawn to meet the house that had been raised. And secondly to create a feature entrance driveway. The wall transforms from retaining to an entrance way as it wraps its way around the front of the building. The end result adds an architecturally pleasing element and a bold statement to the property's surrounds.
Clive River Bank
Hawke's Bay Regional Council
We were a sub contractor on this large scale riverbank protection project. Constructed in the winter, it consisted of a reno mattress with a two metre high gabion wall on top of it. The lower half is submerged at high tide. The work site was a tidal estuary, mud flats at low tide, construction could only be done at low tide and in the mud.
Residential Work
Hawke's Bay
Between 2005 and 2022, we have constructed numerous high end residential gabion retaining walls for a well regarded Hawke's Bay property developer, as well as private clients. The gabions serve two purposes, stabilisation of fragile slip prone hillsides while providing an aesthetically appealing finish with a natural raw element.
