Frequently asked questions

What are the advantages of gabion systems or structures?

Gabions are rectangular, modular cages made from steel wire and filled with rocks. They are:

  • Quick to build
  • Cost-effective
  • Customisable
    Easily scalable
  • Sustainable - made with natural materials and can accommodate vegetation
  • Robust
  • Durable
  • Permeable to water – allowing drainage
  • Flexible – tolerating movement
  • Aesthetically pleasing

Do I need council consent for my residential gabion project?

If your planned structure is under 1 metre tall, you do not need council consent. If it is over 1 metre high, you will need to consult with an architect or engineer and have your plans approved by council.

What is a rock mattress?

A rock mattress is a thinner, flatter gabion, normally used for fortification around waterways such as tidal estuaries.
